Traditional training models can take months or even years to be applied successfully to high-fidelity environments like those used by the Defense Department. Even after extensive training, these systems often show vulnerabilities when introduced to unknown or changing conditions-a challenge known as the simulation-to-real (sim-to-real) gap.
Multiple factors limit the potential of modern autonomous systems (e.g., self-driving vehicles and uncrewed aircraft and watercraft). Autonomy is learned through modeling and simulation, given the expense of training in the real world. Generally, it goes like this:
+ A model of the intended platform requiring autonomy is created.
+ The model goes through various simulations in an environment as realistic as possible to generate the data that trains the autonomous system to make the right decisions.
+ After sufficiently training the model, those learnings are transferred to a physical system and tested to ensure the training works.
+ Training models in high-fidelity environments for Defense Department platforms can sometimes take months to even years.
"In conventional high-fidelity models, the AI agent tends to overfit to the specifics of the simulation, which means that transitioning to the real world becomes problematic," said Dr. Alvaro Velasquez, DARPA's program manager for the effort. "Our objective is to achieve generalizable autonomy across multiple platforms and domains."
Velasquez further hypothesized that employing low-fidelity simulations could produce data at a faster rate, thereby enabling generalization rather than memorization. "We intend to explore autonomy across a wide range of abstract simulations and then transfer that knowledge to various platforms and environments. Moreover, we aim to establish a feedback loop to refine our models and simulations based on real-world experiences," Velasquez added.
Unlike commercial autonomous systems, which often operate within controlled environments, military applications face a plethora of unpredictable variables. These can range from varying flight dynamics and lighting conditions to the unpredictable actions of adversaries. DARPA's initiative seeks to address these challenges head-on by shifting the focus from high-fidelity to low-fidelity simulations, thereby allowing for a more rapid and robust transfer of autonomy.
The TIAMAT program is divided into two phases, each lasting 18 months. The first phase focuses on the development of techniques for transferring autonomy from one simulated environment to another (sim-to-sim). The second phase aims to refine these techniques for transferring autonomy from simulation to the real world (sim-to-real). At the end of each phase, a competition will be held, and the results from the first competition will be used to narrow down the number of participants from six to three.
