As part of Ax-3, Axiom Space conducted a ground test of the Amazon Echo device running Alexa before deploying it to the International Space Station (ISS). This demonstration marked an important step toward developing AI assistants that are "Earth-independent" and capable of aiding astronauts in future Mars missions.
During the demonstration, the Echo device was connected to the ISS network via NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellites, enabling Alexa's use in the microgravity environment of the space station. A crewmember followed a set procedure to evaluate the voice-based assistant's performance. This test is foundational for future AI-enabled voice assistants planned for Axiom Station, the first commercial space station. The insights gained may also be applied to AI use in upcoming Artemis missions.

This infrastructure not only enhances collaboration between Axiom and AWS but also plays a crucial role in validating cloud-based hardware and software for space applications. The partnership aims to leverage AI to optimize Axiom Station's operations, enhance safety, and drive scientific innovation in microgravity research, pharmaceutical development, and stem cell studies.
As Axiom Space readies to launch the first module of Axiom Station, AI integration will be key to its functionality, safety, and scientific potential.
